October Offerings

Uncategorized Oct 15, 2021

I don't know about you, but I am overwhelmingly excited about what October has been offering me.

I have been taking time to review programs, strategies, and goals we had set for this year, and in evaluating what has and has not worked, I have had many "aha" moments.

The changes that the season brings are invigorating me with the energy to make the changes needed to take our business and our members to the levels I dream of for us all.

As with anything, I'm embracing this time and seeing it for the gift that it is.

With that, let's catch up on what I've been up to this week...

Reading

Several of my coaching clients have recently been asking about ways to handle employee turnover and resignation.  I’m sure you’ve heard about the challenges that certain industries are facing in trying to hire and keep employees.  I’ve been doing some research and I found some really interesting articles in Inc. Magazine on this subject.  Links are below.  The one I liked the best was “The magic ingredient to get employees to stick around?  Career Transparency” by  Jessica Stillman.  Click here to read it.

It turns out that there are 3 simple ways to foster career transparency which is what most people want and why they will stay with you if they believe you care:

(1) Discussing a clear growth plan with your employees.  You can do this best by asking questions.  Meet with your employees individually and ask them where they see themselves in the future and what role they want to play in your company. You can really impress them if you help them find a mentor or actually pay for additional training.

(2) Check in on a regular basis.  It’s a really good idea to have weekly meetings with your employees.  The meetings can be check-ins that are 15 minutes long, or something more formal.  They key is regular scheduled meetings.

(3) Celebrate success and wins!  I love this one.  It is easy to do but don’t forget to be mindful of how your employees like to be recognized.  It’s all about servant leadership and showing up as a person who is interested in the welfare of your team.

Connecting

This week, I’m connecting with all the moms out there who are raising girls who want to explore all types of play—not just with dolls and tea sets.  This tweet cause quite the reaction on LinkedIn.  There was a lot of mansplaining and fortunately a lot more “yes!” and “this!”.  I have a son, so I don’t know what my reaction to the sales person would be in a similar situation.  But I do know that there have been many times when I’m so frustrated at being talked to in a certain tone that I want to ROAR! I hope this mom keeps teaching her daughter to stand up for herself.  And I hope I can always find the words I need to say – at the moment I need to say them—when all I really want to do is roar…

Celebrating

I had the opportunity to be a guest speaker at an International Business class at Marquette University this week.  Professor Joanna Bauza (one of our successful WBEs and owner of The Cervantes Group, click here)  invited me and my presentation was about negotiation using my CREATE model (Clarity/Research/Extra, not you/Alternatives/Timeframe/Energy).  I’m happy to say that the session was well received and the questions asked allowed me to share some additional insight.  Have you ever considered guest lecturing at a local university or college?  Contact the Business School and offer your services—I’m pretty sure they will welcome a local business owner coming and sharing “real world” experiences and strategies with students.  And who knows, you might meet your next star employee or get inspired for the next big thing in your business!

So, what is this time of year offering you?

Are there changes you need to make that you have been postponing or even avoiding?

We all know that change can be overwhelming a very stressful way, but with a different mindset, you can embrace change for the beautiful opportunity it is.
